The offensive Gungan pretty much ruined The Phantom Menace when it was released back in 1999. Many of the film's other flaws could have been overlooked, but the fact that George Lucas actually thought including a character who spoke Pidgin English and acted like a total buffoon was a good idea showed just how out of touch the production was. It was beyond just a bad move, it was a dumb move. A dumb character. And it began a trend of dumb decisions that (at least temporarily) tarnished the franchise's image.
