10 Things Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets Gets Hopelessly Wrong

2. The Lead Character Is A Jerk

Valerian himself is presumably supposed to be a dashing, devil-may care space rogue in the Han Solo or Star-Lord mould. There are two problems with this. Firstly, it's not a believable personality for a highly decorated space fed who claims to be bound by the law. Secondly, Valerian comes across as a complete tool.

Most of his time between action sequences is taken up harassing his partner Loreline, whose situation stuck on a spaceship with this arrogant jerk would be more likely to lead to attempted murder than actual romance.

Valerian orders his partner around when he feels like it, constantly claims she wants him even when she has no interest at all, and delivers every line with such an insufferable smirk the audience could be forgiven for wanting the various aliens to just smack the little punk in his smug face.

Added to this is the fact that Dane Dehaan and Cara Delevingne have extremely similar eyebrows and look like brother and sister, making the perfunctory romance between them even ickier than Valerian's jerkitude makes it already.
