10 Things Wrong With Jupiter Ascending

10. One-Dimensional Characters

Mila Kunis' Jupiter Jones is just about the only character in the entire movie who gets any significant development, and as such practically everyone else around her just feels like a bland cipher intended to move the plot forward and little else. Most egregiously under-developed is Channing Tatum's half-breed warrior Caine Wise, whose character hinges almost entirely on the fact that he looks kinda like a dog, wears cool space boots, and has the hots for Jupiter. Similarly, Eddie Redmayne's scenery-devouring villain Balem is essentially an also-ran, and nobody else really gets a look in at all. This is particularly troublesome when the movie pulls audiences in so many directions with so many different supporting characters: take Doona Bae's character of Razo. If you've seen the movie, did you even know her name before reading this? Could you even remember what she was doing in the film? Probably not, because the film introduced far too many characters without giving them any personality or clear motivation whatsoever.
