10 Things You Didn't Know About Darth Maul

9. Benicio Del Toro Almost Played Him

Snatch Benicio Del Toro

Though the role was ultimately split between Ray Park for the live-action performance and dubbed over by Peter Serafinowicz, the original plan was for Maul to be played solely by Benicio Del Toro.

Del Toro ended up leaving the project when George Lucas scaled back the size of Maul's role significantly, transforming him from a philosophical villain into something much more simple and easy for children to digest.

Of course, things have come full circle with Del Toro set to appear as the villain in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VIII, but it's hard not to imagine what might've been if Lucas had stuck to his original conception of the character. It almost certainly would've been much more interesting.
