In the film, Otho mentions at dinner that those who take their own lives become “civil servants”. This is actually something that returns to the film a couple of times, including Miss Argentina who states that she slit her own wrists.

In original ideas for the film, it was supposed to show that Beetlejuice became Juno’s assistant because he hung himself, very incompetently, due to heartbreak. This eventually got cut from the film due to the running time being too long with this included.

However, it is hinted that Beetlejuice has a soft spot for suicide victims when he displays his genuine surprise at Lydia wishing to end her own life.
