10 Things You Didn't Know About 2001: A Space Odyssey
2. The Film Was Shot Almost Entirely Indoors
Filming for 2001: A Space Odyssey primarily took place for 21 months between 1965 and 1967, and Kubrick then continued to work on special effects for an extra year.
And what many people won't know about the production of the movie was that the majority of it was done indoors.
Production took place in two indoor locations - firstly in Shepperton studios, which was chosen because it was the perfect fit for filming the Tycho crater sequences, and finally, in another studio in Borehamwood, where the special effects shots were completed.
Some of the indoor production that was constructed included creating a 30-ton rotating Ferris Wheel that was used for the set of the Discovery spaceship, and many other humongous sets.
The only portion of the film that was filmed on location was the apes sequence from the beginning, which was actually shot on an elevated platform located near the studio.
