The film had a particularly traumatic effect on women, many of whom associated John Hurts death/ birth throes with their own experiences of childbirth. The extent of vomiting was such that several cinemas in Hollywood removed the chest-burster scene to prevent their toilets from being damaged beyond repair. Scott eventually got wind of this and complained to Alan Ladd Jr., who subsequently ordered said cinemas to restore the scene and bite the bullet.
