Despite being most famous as a hero in the Marvel universe, her first appearances were villainous. Due to her Soviet training, Black Widow was originally a threat to S.H.I.E.L.D and associated American heroes, including the people she would end up working with as an Avenger. One of her early missions was an assassination attempt on Iron Man and she very quickly followed it up with a clash with Spider-Man. It was during this period that she met and fell in love with Hawkeye, who was, at that time, also a villain in the world of Marvel. The two decided to switch over to side of good together, with Natasha defecting to the United States and Hawkeye forming an alliance with the Avengers. Though they subsequently split, the relationship was so pivotal for them both that it was somewhat surprising that the movies chose not to reflect their romantic history.
