10 Things You Didn't Know About Saving Private Ryan
1. Viewing Experience
Saving Private Ryan's biggest and most important strength comes from its use of sound. From Miller experiencing shock during the D-Day Landings to the violent shaking explosions, the sound of the film is what makes it such a brutal, hard hitting viewing experience.
Of course, being the brilliant director he is, Spielberg knew this, and when it came time for the film to hit theatres, he requested that they actually turned the film up so the audience would become completely blindsided by the intensity of the action sequences.
The director has also gone on record to say that the film would be released to the public no matter what. At the time, it was believed it would receive an NC-17 rating in the 'States due to its vivid depictions of war violence, but this was eventually overturned. Spielberg said that he wouldn't cut anything out if it had been rated so highly.
For Spielberg, Saving Private Ryan was a passion project; a film he wanted to make to show people the true horrors of the Second World War. Watching it, you can't help but notice he did a seriously good job.
