It's already been touched on just how much of an emotional toll Saving Private Ryan took on its audiences, especially when you consider how many veterans went to see it when it was released.

It was assumed that the effects of the film would be quite severe, and so the government - namely the Department of Veteran Affairs - set up a helpline to help veterans and their families deal with any trauma they feel watching the combat play out.

Therapists were put on stand by to help callers through their emotions, and all told the helpline received nearly 200 calls in just two weeks of the film's release.

Plenty of vets have gone on record to say how hard the film hit them, and how realistic the D-Day Landing scene was.
