10 Things You Didn't Know About The Descent
5. The Crawlers Were Based Off Nosferatu
According to Neil Marshall, the Crawlers aren't even the bad guys of the film. He said: "This isn't about six cavers being attacked by savage monsters, this is a film about a happy society of savage monsters being attacked by these girls because they kind of mete out as much terror and pain as the Crawlers do."
With that being said, there's no denying the terror such a repulsive group of creatures brings to a film and the Crawlers, designed by Paul Hyett, are the perfect depiction of what a load of cavemen who never left their caves would eventually grow to look like.
Apparently the designs of the Crawlers was based off the legendary vampire Nosferatu from the 1922 silent film classic. With their pale skin, long claws and pointed ears, there's some chilling about their look and the decision to employ actors rather than stuntmen to portray them gives each of these cave dwellers their own looks and personality.
It took about three hours to get these actors looking suitably chilling, but it could have been much worse; early designs for the creatures had them suited up with huge googly eyes, though that was thankfully scrapped for looking too stupid.
