7. The Bride Of Frankenstein - A Swan
In James Whale's Bride of Frankenstein, the titular scientist convinces his mentor, Dr. Septimus Pretorious, to create a mate for his Monster. In the climax, the doctors successfully reanimate a female to serve as the Monster's partner but are disappointed to learn that she is repulsed by his appearance and so, rejects him.
Despite being the titular character, The Bride is only in the highly-praised sequel for five minutes. Not only that, she has no dialogue. Nevertheless, the character made a lasting impression due to her striking appearance and Elsa Lanchester's chilling performance.
Because she is unable to speak, The Bride can only communicate via hissing. Although many viewers believe this sound was based on a snake or a cat, it was actually inspired by a swan. For years, Lanchester and her husband fed swans by a lake in Regent's Park, London. Because the birds are very territorial, they hissed at Lanchester when she approached them. Over time, she came to the conclusion that the beautiful, graceful looking birds were "really, very nasty creatures".
Yes. Yes, they are.
