2. The First One Is Casting Now (For A Female Lead)
The scripting issues clearly haven't had much of an impact of the first spin-off, however, as recent reports have revealed the casting process has begun. The Force Awakens famously had an open casting call (admittedly to build hype rather than actually out of hope of finding a fan-actor), but the next film looks to be targeting a bit closer to the A-List. Edwards is reportedly looking at the likes of Rooney Mara, Tatiana Maslany and Felicity Jones to play the lead in the film, which reveals a massive, previously unannounced bit of info - it's a female-led Star Wars movie. Gender equality in blockbusters has become an increasingly mainstream concern in recent years, with The Hunger Games dispelling the myth that a movie led by a woman can't compete in the box office sausage fest. And, as Star Wars is a series long lambasted for its disregard for women, it makes sense for the resurgent series to get in there before the more recent kings do (DC and Marvel will finally have female led movies in 2017 and 2018 respectively).
