10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Dumbo (1941)
1. It's Technically A Cash Grab Movie
Although Dumbo is now a beloved classic with a devoted fanbase, it was only created to make the studio some quick money. After the consecutive box office failures of Pinocchio and Fantasia, Walt Disney and his company were in desperate need of finances in order to go ahead with their upcoming film Bambi.
The idea for Dumbo came about from a children's illustration book called "Dumbo the Flying Elephant", written by Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl. Overall, the cost of production came to just $812,000, estimated to be the smallest budget ever for a Disney picture.
Despite Dumbo not being as artistically rich as its predecessors and having a shorter runtime than most full length Disney features, it is still an excellent movie with some cutting edge animation.
Furthermore, it’s an important film within the franchise because had it not been a success, the entire studio could have sunk and we may never have gotten films such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King and Frozen.
