10 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Hellraiser

4. The Movie Ran Out Of Money

Even though some of the special effects in Hellraiser look quite complicated, the film's original budget was under a million dollars. To keep costs down, Clive Barker had to cut every corner imaginable including shooting most scenes in the same house, using a single camera, and only hiring unknown actors. He also relied on overhead and zoom shots to hide the fact that many shots were devoid of anything that resembled a set.

Despite the director's creative methods to keep the budget down, he completely ran out of cash and had to beg New Line Cinema for more, bringing the total cost of the movie up to a clean million.

Although this extra money covered the budget for primary filming, there was absolutely nothing left for the special effects. With no extra dough, Barker had no choice but to complete most of the FX by hand in a single weekend.

He found the experience so stressful, he was drunk the whole time. Considering the time restraint Barker was under, the lack of money, (and lack of sobriety), it's a miracle the special effects turned out as well as they did.
