Nancy Savoca's 1991 coming-of-age drama Dogfight starred River Phoenix and Lili Taylor as star-crossed young lovers, and in a development befitting their strong screen chemistry, the actors decided to band together against Warner Bros.' request for reshoots.

After test audiences responded negatively to the film's bittersweet ending - where Phoenix and Taylor's characters are uneasily reunited after years apart - the studio attempted to convince director Savoca to shoot a more unambiguously happy ending.

Savoca refused, telling Warner Bros. that they were free to reshoot the ending without her, but that she would insist upon her name being removed from the film if so.

Handily, both Phoenix and Taylor stood by their director, as when the studio called them up for reshoots, they both refused to do it without Savoca's involvement.

According to the director, it was Phoenix's refusal to reshoot the ending which caused Warner Bros. to back off, though they responded by effectively sending the film out to die in cinemas, where it grossed just $394,631 despite strong reviews.
