10 Times Actors Went Too Far (And Improved Movie Scenes)

1. Steve Carell - The 40-Year-OId Virgin

A Clockwork Orange
Universal Pictures

Hoping to end on a lighter note, let's venture back to 2005's most extravagant comedy, The 40-Year-Old-Virgin. Full of some hilarious dialogue and memorable characters, this is director Judd Apatow at his most unique and original.

Being a comedy, it's also a film full of some brilliant ad-libs and risk taking. Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen's back and forth game of "You know how I know you're gay?" is all improvised, but the best moment of unscripted glory comes from Steve Carell's title character, Andy Stitzer.

Taken to get a body wax, Andy is laid down and looked over by his friends - Rudd, Rogen and Romany Malco - as the brutal process begins. Carell actually got waxed for the scene, and the results are better than anyone's wildest dreams. The whole thing is made even better by a behind the scenes video which shows Carell boldly claiming it won't hurt that much.

But, boy, does it. As the waxing begins, he begins to curse and yell in some truly imaginative and hysterical ways, at one point shouting "Kelly Clarkson!" and insulting the poor woman doing the deed.

Watching his co-stars attempt to keep straight faces makes his reactions all the more brilliant, and the whole sequence elevates the film into another level. Carell's commitment to the humour of the film help make this a scene you're not going to want to miss.
