Bong Joon-ho's delightfully weird dark adventure film Okja premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival amid intense controversy about the place of Netflix Original movies at the world's most prestigious film festival.

This resulted in one of the most fiery premieres at the fest in recent years, as within seconds of the movie starting and the Netflix logo flashing on screen, it was met with a cacophony of boos by the assembled crowd.

Things got worse from there, however, as the first seven minutes of the film were then presented in the incorrect aspect ratio, causing angry audience members to stomp their feet and even hiss in protest.

Cannes organisers were forced to apologise for the screw-up, though neither the Netflix hand-wringing nor the technical difficulties ultimately stopped the film from scoring rave reviews from most critics.

As for the director? In typically irreverent fashion, Bong said of the kerfuffle, "I'm quite happy about it because you people got to see the opening sequence twice."
