10 Times Comedic Actors Went Against Type (And Totally Pulled It Off)
6. Jonah Hill - Moneyball
Jonah Hill's filmography speaks for itself - he's a comedy staple. Funny, endearing and always somehow likeable, his roles in Superbad, Funny People, Get Him to the Greek and Megamind helped set him on the way to being a big name for comedy.
But in 2011, after a slew of hits and a successful run of instant classic comedies, Hill took a career detour to play Peter Brand in the drama Moneyball alongside Brad Pitt.
Though a risky move on paper, Hill made it work with ease. Playing Brand with a subtle intensity and maturity, he proved to be a match for seasoned dramatic actors such as Pitt, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Robin Wright.
Beside being nominated for his first Oscar, Hill also found his career taking a new and exciting path. He continued his dramatic success with roles in The Wolf of Wall Street, War Dogs and True Story, and though he remains a frequent comedic performer, his dramatic chops have opened up a whole new chapter in his career, promising big things.
And maybe an Oscar, if he keeps it up.
