4. Pedro Almodóvar - Sex
Perhaps a lesser known director to those who stick to Hollywood films only, Pedro Almodóvar is a giant in Spain and is the most internationally acclaimed Spanish director. His works include Volver (2006) featuring Penelope Cruz, Talk to Her (Hable Con Ella) (2002) and Bad Education (La Mala Educación) (2004), featuring Gael García Bernal. Almodóvar's movies frequently feature strong female characters and transsexuals. Interestingly, Almodóvar often discusses rape, sex and sexual fetish in his film, and whether or not he has a sexual fetish himself is unknown, but he sure is fascinated with it, projecting it often in his films. Most notably, his 2011 film The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito) featuring discussed the sexual fetish of a brilliant plastic surgeon (played by Antonio Banderas), who becomes obsessed with creating artificial armor-like skin after his wife died in a horrible car crash. The surgeon keeps a young woman as prisoner to experiment on, and eventually it is revealed that the woman is not a woman after all, but was the man that tried to rape his late wife. The surgeon gave him a forced sex change and turned him physically into his wife, repeatedly trying to have sex with her. It's an unsettling story and very haunting in its observation of the surgeon's sexual desire, indeed.
