10 Times Your Favourite Directors Totally Let You Down

9. The Lovely Bones - Peter Jackson

Paramount PicturesParamount PicturesOff the back of his immensely successful adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson had Hollywood in the palm of his hand. Indeed, he was gifted with the chance to do pretty much whatever he wanted, and chose to render his dream project - a remake of King Kong - for a new generation. The resulting film was something of a triumph - adventurous, romantic, visually stunning; a worthy successor to the legacy of Rings, no doubt. For his next film, though, he set Alice Sebold's acclaimed novel, The Lovely Bones, in his sights. Big mistake, Jackson. Given how brilliant pretty much everything Peter Jackson had jumped upon up had turned out until The Lovely Bones, nobody was doubting the fact that his adaptation of this novel - about a young girl who is raped and murdered and watches on from Heaven - would be a magnificent one. Unfortunately, though, the director completely misjudges the material, making for one of the most tone confused movies in recent memory. There are good visuals, but there is no poetry, no heart, no consistency. It was just one big fumble on Jackson's part.
