7. The Ladykillers - The Coen Brothers
Touchstone PicturesStrange. Whereas almost all of the films in the Coen Brothers' canon feel like "them," so to speak, The Ladykillers feels like it's been imported from a parallel universe where one of the siblings is actually Tim Burton. Without a doubt, anyone expecting the consistent brilliance of regular Coen fare with this movie was bound to be disappointed upon first sitting down to this frenzied mess of a remake; and did we really need it in the first place, given that the original movie is something of a comedy classic in its own right? The answer: no thanks, guys. Tom Hanks found himself at the centre of this thing, and it's probably safe to say that he probably doesn't regret signing up to this movie in retrospect, given that his performance is downright demented (in a good way), and is a far cry from anything else he's ever done. But the rest of the movie falls entirely flat in all the ways you expect a Coen movie not to. The sense of desperation clinging to every scene is largely off-putting, as joke after joke falls flat. The weirdest thing here is that this is clearly a passion project, and yet it feels so very half-assed.
