2. Solaris - What Is Solaris?

If you came into Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Solaris blind, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re watching a horror movie for the first half hour.

Clinical psychologist Dr. Chris Kelvin is asked to travel to a space station orbiting the mysterious planet of Solaris and find out why the astronauts on board have cut all contact with Earth.

When he arrives, he finds blood all over the ceiling and the astronauts seemingly living in tense isolation from one another. To make matters even stranger, Kelvin wakes up onboard the next day to find his long dead wife in bed with him.

Apparently, Solaris is bringing the crew’s dead loved ones back to life for purposes unknown. And that’s exactly what’s so terrifying.

What Solaris is and why it’s doing this are never revealed. Is it benevolent? Is it trying to torment the people onboard the station? Kelvin seems to think the former, as he eventually chooses to stay on the falling station as it tumbles into Solaris.

Whether he is really reunited with his wife at the film’s end or whether it’s simply a dying dream is also anyone’s guess.
