10 Times Marvel Movies F*cked Up Character Design

10. Arnim Zola - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Toby Jones is a fantastic actor, so to see him squirm his way through The First Avenger as the Red Skull's science officer, and glorified Igor figure, Arnim Zola, was something of a treat. Here was an English character actor who was used well in a secondary role for a change and made an impact doing it. Thanks to Jones, Zola exuded a sort of spineless self-preservation and supressed malice that was great to watch, but unfortunately they insisted on trying to bring him to the present for The Winter Soldier. It was interesting to hear how Zola secured Hydra's future, but just because the comic book character exists as a face inside a computer screen mounted in a robot's stomach doesn't mean we needed to see a Matrix style face explaining the plot. Zola's presence in The Winter Soldier would have arguably worked better with Jones actually appearing in either recordings or flashbacks rather than speaking directly from a CRT monitor that probably couldn't even run DOS.
