Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic novel series was adapted into a 2009 rom-com film, Confessions of a Shopaholic, revolving around shopping addict Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) as she's forced to reckon with her self-destructive spending habits.

Principal photography was completed in May 2008, yet before the film could be released the global recession became markedly worse, with investment banks failing or being bailed out, the housing market collapsing, and millions losing their homes.

And so, it was decided that releasing a film that was flippant about over-spending in the midst of a major worldwide economic downturn wasn't a good look.

As a result, Isla Fisher returned to shoot a new ending in December 2007, just two months before release.

Though it remains unknown precisely how things originally wrapped up, the new ending was reportedly written to be more sympathetic to Rebecca's plight, and, by extension, the audience's own potential financial strife.

The final released ending sees Rebecca resolving her debts and changing her spending habits, but it's possible the original ending left a little of her spendthrift tendencies in tact.
