10 Times The MCU Broke Its Own Rules
3. Bruce Banner Has Hulk's Memories When It's Convenient - Avengers: Infinity War
Thor: Ragnarok introduces a unique wrinkle to the Bruce Banner/Hulk dynamic by having Banner reveal that he has no memory of the two years he spent as The Hulk. He says, "It's like he had the keys to the car and I was locked in the trunk."
Yet this is seemingly contradicted at the start of Avengers: Infinity War, when Hulk battles Thanos, gets his ass kicked, and is then promptly magicked to Earth by Heimdall.
Hulk crashes through the ceiling of the New York Sanctum Sanctorum and transforms back into Banner, before he tells Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong), "Thanos is coming."
Except, going by Ragnarok's logic, how would Banner have any knowledge of this, let alone be unexpectedly well-briefed on Thanos during Infinity War's post-title exposition dump?
You can argue that Hulk changed back into Banner between the end of Ragnarok and Thanos' arrival in the mid-credits scene, but given that Banner is extremely anxious about getting trapped as The Hulk, it seems rather odd to have Hulk change into Banner and then back to Hulk off-screen in order to set up the start of Infinity War.
Marvel would probably tell you "don't overthink it," even if Banner's lucidity mere seconds after transforming from The Hulk doesn't make much sense. Thankfully with the two now being merged into Professor Hulk, the problem has been solved.
