10 Times The MCU Totally Subverted Expectations

1. Captain America Surviving Civil War

In the seminal Civil War comics, Steve Rogers dies, so it's understandable to think that maybe he'll die in the movie.

But in the end, Rogers didn't die. In fact, nobody did. The closest we got to a death was Rhodes becoming partially paralyzed, but he's seen learning to walk again at the end.

It's certainly not disappointing that nobody died in Civil War, especially Steve, because it means they can all return, which most of them did in Infinity War. It does highlight one of the most fervently suggested problems the MCU supposedly has. According to some naysayers, there's little to no stakes within the MCU.

Having said that, the surprise survival of everyone was definitely a surprise to all fans, but unlike the twist from Iron Man 3, it didn't put the film in a bad light. To this day, Captain America Civil War is still regarded as one of, if not the best MCU film of all the films currently released.
