10 Times Two Actors Perfectly Executed The Same Character
6. Obi-Wan Kenobi - Alec Guiness & Ewan McGregor
George Lucas created a phenomenon when he unleashed Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope in 1977, the ultimate sci-fi space adventure story which really needs no introduction. Over a trilogy of films, Lucas introduced us to the story of Luke Skywalker and a rebellion against the evil galactic empire controlled by Emperor Palpatine and his warlord Darth Vader.
In the opening episode, Luke is merely a farm boy who can only dream of the adventure he is about to embark on. This starts when he meets his mentor, the aging Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, who steps in to help Skywalker when he is most needed and teaches him the ways of the magical Force. The heroic Jedi was played by traditional English actor Alec Guinness, who famously distanced his involvement in the film, which he classed a B-movie space soap opera. However, his role as Kenobi would go on to define his career for a new generation.
Lucas of course would eventually revisit to tell the origin story of his epic tale in a new trilogy starting with The Phantom Menace (1999); telling the story of Luke’s father Anakin Skywalker and his descent into becoming Darth Vader, as well as the rise of the Emperor and the fall of the Jedi Order. Obi-Wan Kenobi plays a key role, with Ewan McGregor superbly taking on the character across all three movies, before he once again revisited the role in Disney’s recent Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022) TV series.
