7. Samuel L. Jackson Requested A Jheri Curl Wig - Pulp Fiction
The circumstances through which Samuel L. Jackson came to wear a Jheri curl wig for the role of Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction sure are hilarious.
Writer-director Quentin Tarantino had imagined Jules as sporting an afro, yet due to the outrageous mistake of a production assistant, Jackson ended up with the Jheri curl. Jackson said:
"Well, Quentin's a huge fan of blaxploitation films, so in his mind, Jules had this big afro. And, unfortunately for him, he sent this young, white P.A. over to South Central to buy an afro wig, and she bought a Jheri curl wig, thinking it's an Afro wig.
She brought it back, you know. Quentin kind of railed at her, went off, and I'm like, 'No, no, no, it's perfect,' because NWA is starting to hit, you know, they were large, and all those guys had Jheri curls."
And like that, the combination of a happy accident and an insistent Jackson led to Jules' iconic look being solidified far beyond Tarantino's original plan.
