5. Detective Azuma (Violent Cop, 1989)
Detective Azuma was already a badass before his friend chose to end his own life and before his sister was kidnapped by Yakuza gangsters but after these events something inside him snapped. Azuma changed from badass to sociopath in moments and set out on a new path refusing ever again to find himself in a position that leaves him vulnerable. The scary thing about Azuma is he responds to every situation - no matter how small - with extreme violence. He has a Judge Dredd like propensity for insane levels of aggression against his foes and just like the square jawed law man from Mega City One Azuma is completely deadpan even when he's cutting people up and leaving them in a pool of their own blood. So deadpan is Azuma in fact that he almost appears asleep at times but that's just the calm before the storm - a staple of Beat Takeshi's performances throughout his long career.
