10 True Ghost Stories That Inspired Horror Films

4. The Haunting In Connecticut

Based on the Snedekers, The Haunting in Connecticut isn't a particularly great film, nor is it one that utilises its true story inspiration to its full potential. Exaggerating and cheapening the events that occurred in the Snedeker household, there's moments of truth that are far more frightening than Hollywood creation lying underneath the surface.

It's true that the family moved into a home that was previously, unbeknownst to them, a funeral parlour - a place of death and malintent so strong that it wasn't long before spirits started manifesting and causing issues for the harried family. With their son Philip suffering from cancer and his hospital an easy distance away from their new home, moving wasn't as quick an option as they would have hoped for.

Philip was also diagnosed with schizophrenia soon after moving into the home, resulting in bouts of dark and violent actions towards his siblings that resulted in him being sent away. His symptoms eased off after leaving, and his cancer also went into remission.

The Snedeker's claims ended up contradicting each other when recounting their experiences to various sources, and the true story itself was also allegedly embellished by the writer to tie the miscommunicated strands together. The family still insists that something terrible lurked in the house whilst they inhabited it however - and Philips illnesses mysteriously reacting to these events are hard evidence in their favour.

In any case, the tales recounted by those involved are enough to send a shiver up your spine, and if they're to be believed with the same intensity as the Snedeker's themselves - there's some terrifying truths that can be lurking in your walls.
