10 True Stories Explained By Horror Movies
9. Banshee Chapter
There's an absolutely wild amount of media based on Project MK-Ultra, from Stranger Things, to Jacob's Ladder, to The X-Files and beyond - however, it's Banshee Chapter that stands out. Here, we have a central story revolving almost entirely around the CIA's very real mind control experiments from the 50s to the 70s.
It should be noted, of course, that Banshee Chapter is at once a dive into the effects plaguing those subjected to DMT-19 experimentation and also a love letter to H. P. Lovecraft's From Beyond. The lines between fiction and reality are blurred into a dizzying, terrifying experience, but the mind-melting reality is still very much there.
Investigative journalist Anna is drawn into the worrying disappearance of her friend James, a man who has subjected himself to the drugs used in MK-Ultra experimentation and suffers awful consequences as a result. Monstrous forms and strange sounds merge into possessions and a relentless entity, coalescing into the characters exploring alleged MK-Ultra facilities in an attempt to escape their dire fates.
We don't know the true extent of the real life project and weren't even told of its existence until after the project ended - so who knows how deep it really goes. As a result, it's fair to say the hallucinatory effects suffered by the MK-Ultra subjects are eerily at home in Banshee Chapter, at the very least.
