10 'True Stories' You Should Take With A Pinch Of Salt

5. Public Enemies (2009)

public-enemies5 Johnny Depp again, this time in Public Enemies. The film on its own is a pretty good action movie, think Gangster Squad but with less cliches and you don't leave the cinema feeling like you have been wronged by Hollywood. When Public Enemies was released it got mixed reviews and one reason for this was the biased view of John Dillinger. Every interview with Johnny Depp became annoying because he kept saying this genius phrase: "It's interesting 'cos John Dillinger was public enemy number one but, he was actually never an enemy of the public." Wow... I wonder how long it took him to write that! He was referring to Dillinger's portrayal in the film because there are a few inaccuracies between that and real life. Dillinger robbed banks... it's illegal to do that. There's a scene where he and his friends are robbing a bank and they refuse to take money from the customers claiming they are 'after the bank's money' and not theirs... our money is in the banks, that's how they work! Anyway, maybe he was seen as a bit of a rock star back then. The harrowing interrogation scene where Billie is brutally beaten did not happen to her but it did happen to other women related to the group; Baby Face Nelson's wife was interrogated this way. There is a scene where Dillinger walks right into the police stations where the Dillinger investigative team is based. The station is empty bar one officer who is busy watching a game on the TV. Dillinger asks the man what the score is and he replies without even looking at him so Dillinger walks right back out. This makes the police look pretty dumb but there is no evidence to suggest this ever happened - though it is possible! Overall, Public Enemies is a good film just remember that John Dillinger was a member of the public.
