10 Truly Chilling Documentary Films

9. Cropsey

Croepsey The dark legend of the Boogeyman remains one of America's most infamous nightmare tales. The appearance of this mythical being has taken countless forms over the years which vary between societies. Sometimes he has a hook for a hand. Sometimes he is 12ft tall. In certain New York urban legends, this monster takes the form of a crazed child-snatcher named Cropsey. And in their investigation of this haunting myth, directors Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio discover more than they bargained for: exposing the chilling reality of this character that was formerly considered as nothing more than an urban myth. After peeling back several disturbing layers, Zeman and Brancaccio unearth the demented, drooling figure of Andre Rand: a psychotic kidnapper who roamed the daunting remains of the mental institution facility of Willow Brook. What follows is a series of terrifying revelations, accounts, and images that provide a former old wives' tale with a sickeningly fresh sense of authenticity. Cropsey is truly chilling for the most part, and the stuff of nightmares for the rest. This is one of the most frightening horror films ever made. And what's more - it's absolutely real.
