2. Warden Norton (The Shawshank Redemption)

Warden Samuel Norton is the leader of a facility of rehabilitation and a man of Christ. But boy oh boy is he a hateful human being. Played by Bob Gunton in admirably calm but cold manner, Norton joins the list of prison wardens who rule their building with an iron fist, slyly accepting back-handers and exploiting his power at every opportunity he gets. Whilst all the signs point to the protagonist Andy Dufresne being completely innocent, Norton wants to hear none of it, regularly having Dufresne cast into solitary confinement and dismissing an opportunity for the prisoner to prove that he was wrongly accused. It's not just Dufresne who suffers at the hands of the Warden either - in one particularly harrowing scene, we see Norton treating one inmate like a problem dog who'd pooped on the rug one too many times, tricking him into a false sense of security before taking him out back and gunning him down. The prison ruler has some fierce competition for the title of most hated, but Warden Norton is certainly up there with the worst of them.
