This is an odd one. Helena Bonham Carter's appearance on this list isn't so much to do with being typecast in a certain role as it is with being typecast in a certain director's films. It's common knowledge that Carter's partner is the weird but wonderful director Tim Burton, so it's hardly surprising that the actor has been on the receiving end of a great deal of nepotism. Appearing in over eight films directed by Burton from Alice In Wonderland and Sweeney Todd to Big Fish and Corpse Bride, Carter is more than just a recurring actor in Burton's work. And while you can hardly say that all of the above roles are even remotely similar, they're part of the worlds that Burton creates i.e. dark, sinister and atmospheric visuals heavily spliced by Gothic influences. The pair met on the set of the 2001 version of Planet of The Apes and started dating shortly after, with Carter having recurring appearances in Burton's films ever since. The Typecast-Breaking Roles: Two prominent examples immediately come to mind: The King's Speech and the Harry Potter film series. In terms of the former, Carter couldn't have been cast in a role more different to her usual ones in Burton's films. Playing the role of Queen Elizabeth introduced Carter to a much, much wider audience than previously, gaining her recognition not for being that actor that always appears in Tim Burton films, but the complete opposite. Let's also not forget that Carter has appeared in more than just a handful of period dramas on British television, some of which were released long before Carter had probably even heard of Burton's name.
