10 Typecast Actors That Proved Everyone Wrong

6. Jim Carrey

Perhaps one of the greatest actors when it comes to comedy films, Carrey's career has been built on his ability to play wacky, outlandish and outright hilarious characters. Carrey came to mainstream prominence with his starring roles as Ace Ventura, the quite frankly crazy pet detective that devoted his life to the protection of animals. After gaining so much recognition for his role, Carrey was continually cast in comedy films that encouraged him to play wacky characters. Liar Liar, The Mask, Bruce Almighty and Dumb & Dumber all had Carrey playing excitable characters that accentuated his physical presence of making people laugh with nothing but his facial expressions. The Typecast-Breaking Roles: While Carrey may still be remembered primarily as a comedy actor (and there's nothing wrong with that), his prowess for making people laugh certainly isn't his only method of entertainment. The Truman Show helped Carrey to show his detractors that he could in fact perform emotionally gripping characters and wasn't just a one-trick pony. And while his character in that film still resorted to some outbursts of exaggerated humour, there's no denying that his performance as the unwitting subject of a lifelong reality show was moving and believable. Other than the Truman Show though, both Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and The Number 23 cast Carrey in more serious roles. The latter film was a flop, but the former was a bittersweet tale that perfectly captured Carrey's multiple talents.
