10 Unbelievable Movies Based On True Stories

5. Dead Ringers

David Cronenberg's characteristically twisted tale about two twin gynecologists who operate on women with bizarre sets of genitalia, based on Bari Wood's novel, actually has some basis in fact. Just as Jeremy Irons' twins in the film were drug addicts, the real life twins, Stewart and Cyril Marcus, were both hooked on barbiturates, and in the mid-1970s, their corpses were found slumped together, having been dead for roughly a week. Though Cronenberg layers on his usually demented, surreal imagery and lurid tone, what many will have pawned off as a grotesque fantasy is actually bizarrely real. Yes, Cronenberg altered a lot of facts to make the film more cinematically compelling, but there were two drug-addicted twin gynecologists who lived and died under very strange circumstances. You'll never watch this bizarre film the same way again.
