10 Under-Appreciated Recent Movies Destined To Become Cult Classics
7. A Ghost Story
A Ghost Story was always going to be divisive. Shot for
$100,000, the movie stars Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, with one of them stuck
under a sheet for 60% of the film. Much of the film’s without dialogue and the
1.33 : 1 (think more of a square than a rectangle) had viewers far from
pleased.
The film has its followers, even a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, but also many who saw it as overtly artsy, pretentious, and downright boring. The film’s third act goes a bit off the rails and dives into themes and metaphors many couldn’t comprehend, let alone general audiences.
The movie’s an ambitious and complicated portrait of grief, staying far from the typical narrative formula and basically creating its own; especially towards the end. For those who think watching someone eat a whole pie for ten minutes straight just to vomit it up isn’t for them, I’d go ahead and skip this one.
