10 Underappreciated 80s Slashers

8. My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine was a clever Slasher revenge movie with a great urban legend feel, set in a small mining town called Valentine Bluffs.

The town are planning the first Valentine Dance in twenty years, having all but cancelled Valentine's Day following a mining accident caused by negligence. The only survivor to be rescued survived through cannibalism before going crazy and committing a series of murders which blighted the day for the town. As the town plans for the dance it seems the murderer has returned and celebrations are again cancelled when the police panic. Not to be deterred, the teenagers of the town decide to have a party anyway, this time in the mines, and carnage ensues as the murderer begins to kill the partying youngsters.

My Bloody Valentine has a lot of great Slasher tropes and helped to set the tone and formula for the genre - the killer wears a gas mask and mining gear, creating a great industrial theme, and the kills themselves are all great to watch and well played out. The Friday the 13th impact on this movie is also clearly illustrated, even down to the kids being warned by an old guy in the pub about the Valentine's Day curse on the town.
