10 Underappreciated 90s Horror Movies
9. Deep Rising
Way over at the other end of the spectrum, this big budget, CGI-laden action horror movie from 1998 ranks among the most underrated creature features ever made.
Written and directed by Stephen Sommers (who would go on to major box office success the following year with The Mummy), Deep Rising centres on a shady bunch of criminals planning a raid on a luxurious cruise liner. However, before they reach said boat, it is infiltrated by a mysterious creature from beneath the sea with a taste for human flesh.
The would-be thieves arrive to find the ship seemingly deserted, but soon come to find they've bitten off a lot more than they can chew. The same can't be said of the carnivorous sea monster, however.
While it may sound a bit generic from the synopsis alone, Deep Rising proves to be an absolute whale of a time. There's a wonderful balance of tension and humour, helped considerably by a gleefully cartoonish central turn from Treat Williams.
Unlike on The Mummy movies, Sommers doesn't over-rely on the CGI, and piles on the thrilling set-pieces whilst also crafting characters you care about. And most happily, by contrast with most films of its sort we've seen since, it doesn't wimp out when it comes to the gore; no PG-13 for this one.
