10 Underrated Christmas Movies You Need To See
7. The Man Who Invented Christmas
Charles Dickens' masterpiece, A Christmas Carol, has been adapted more times than any sane man can count, but rarely do we look into the life of the man behind it, despite him easily being one of the most fascinating figures from his era of fiction writing. Well, along came The Man Who Invented Christmas to change all that.
Charles Dickens finds himself in a position familiar to writers not named Stephen King - under pressure from his publicist to have at least a new pitch ready, but being completely without ideas. However, a mix of certain events combined with his famous hatred of the upper class and the treatment of children in industrial revolution era London gives birth to a new idea. Or rather, a character. And just to bring this idea as far as possible, he turns around, and there's Ebenezer Scrooge standing fully formed before him.
While the film flubs certain details about Dickens' life, it's all in service to the narrative so it's forgivable. And even barring that, the way it explores creativity and the mind of an artist is fascinating enough to enjoy on its own.
