10 Underrated Films From 1999

In what has to be his ballsiest film, Kevin Smith sends up Catholicism in a way only he can: make a crude, buddy road trip movie about two fallen angels trying to get back into heaven.
Smith clearly understands and reveres the religion, pulling in obscure references and seamlessly integrating them into the story. He put a lot of passion and effort into this script, and even though his visual style is limited, he more than makes up for it with entertaining characters and excellent world-building. His crude yet philosophical stoner dialogue explores compelling questions about the nature of faith and the harm organized religion does to individual belief.
In the wrong hands, the fantasy elements could easily clash with the juvenile, Gen X humor, but Smith blends them seamlessly. That goes for the eclectic cast, too, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck playing the two bickering fallen angels, Chris Rock as the forgotten 13th apostle, Jason Mewes as a foul-mouthed prophet, and Alan Rickman as the literal voice of God.
