10 Underrated Films From 1999
4. Galaxy Quest
Nowadays, self-aware comedies about popular genre films are a dime a dozen, but Galaxy Quest was one of the first and best.
When aliens recruit the washed-up cast of a once-popular Star Trek-Esque show to go on a real space adventure, they must improvise and fumble their way through dangerous planets and intergalactic threats. On the surface, the film may look like a dated 90s sci-fi flick for kids, but the excellent cast, sharp humour, and meta-commentary made the film a cult classic.
Galaxy Quest has managed to stay relevant throughout the years with its commentary on fame and fandom, but it also works on its own as a fun space adventure. There are enjoyable set pieces that serve as callbacks to the original Star Trek-like space battles and one-on-one combat with a deadly alien, and the film executes them to great effect.
There’s a lot of great practical effects work, and the character designs for the aliens range from humorous to terrifying. While Tim Allen’s presence may date the film, the supporting performances from Alan Rickman, Tony Shaloub, and Sam Rockwell are iconic and quotable.
