6. David Fincher - Zodiac

A lesson in suspense and tension, Zodiac is a methodically paced film that slowly builds up around the hunt for the Zodiac Killer in the late 60s and early 70s. The films has a fantastic cast lead by Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. who all put in incredible performances as they all become slowly obsessed over the identity of the infamous murderer.

Before Zodiac, Fincher was known for more high tension films such as Fight Club and Se7en but this movies chooses a more deliberate lowkey narrative with a sense of increasing dread. Every frame lingers just long enough to make the audience uncomfortable and second guess the reason why it endures on the screen.

Zodiac manages to be an edge of your seat experience that never lets up as you become just as invested in the mystery as the characters. The film's distinctive style is a clear precursor to Fincher's later work on Netflix's Mindhunter which is another underrated piece of Fincher's work.
