The slick, self-assured revenge flick has become a saturated area of the market over the past few decades, with genuinely original and compelling entries into the genre increasingly hard to come across. The remedy, as proven by newcomer Jeremy Saulnier, is to approach vengeance from a different angle, like the writer/director did with his 2014 debut Blue Ruin.

It follows a man named Dwight, who on the surface appears to be nothing more than a beach drifter whose entire existence seems to be contained in the garbage bags he drags along behind him. His true ambitions are revealed when we learn that the man who murdered his parents is due to be released from prison. Dwight’s wait is now over – he can return to his home town and take his long awaited revenge.

While Macon Blair manages to convey just how useless an assassin Dwight is, he never, not even for a second, allows his character to come across as comic. The subject matter is just too heavy (and his vengeance too bloody) to allow for any levity, though, while Dwight is far from your typical underdog, his righteous crusade to avenge and protect his family is enough to lift your spirits.

Phil still hasn't got round to writing a profile yet, as he has an unhealthy amount of box sets on the go.
