10 Underrated Horror Movies With Unexpected Twists

8. Dark Circles

Alex (Johnathon Schaech) and Penny (Pell James) are a young couple who have just had a baby. Being responsible adults, they decide to move out of the city and into a more rural area, where their child can grow up happy and safe.

As it turns out, this was the worst possible thing they could have done.

The pair’s new home is haunted by what seems to be the ghost of a young woman. At first, this seems to be the result of sleep-deprived new parents, but it quickly becomes apparent that this unwelcome intruder is very, very real.

It seems for the longest time that Dark Circles is going the way of every other haunted house flick, heading towards one last confrontation with the ghoul. That’s when it plays its full hand; the so-called “ghost” isn’t a ghost at all, she’s a real woman.

The wannabe specter is actually suffering from trauma following the loss of her own baby some time prior to the events of the film. This is a complete subversion of expectations and frames the events of the movie through an entirely different lens.
