5. Ducktales the Movie: Treasure of the Lost Lamp
Ducktales was, and still is, a wildly popular favorite from Disney's syndicated television stable. The adventures of Scrooge McDuck, his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and their pal Launchpad McQuack made their leap to the big screen in 1990 with an adventure that involved a genie, a magic lamp, and a madman bent on securing said lamp for his own diabolical needs. Yes, this movie sounds almost EXACTLY like
that Disney movie that everyone loves, but it was more of an Indiana Jones homage than an Aladdin fore-bearer. It was actually an enjoyable film that remains one of the best film adaptations of a TV show. Also, this film gets bonus points for using Christopher Lloyd as the awesomely creepy baddie who's chasing after the lamp. The film broke even in the States, but Disney didn't see a big enough hit to justify further planned installments of the series. What's worse, if you want to watch the movie today you have only two options: buy the bare bones DVD from a highly marked up reseller, or join the Disney Movie Club/Movie Rewards program. Either way, this film isn't as easily available for public sale as most Disney films are, and it's a shame. While not a "greatest hit", it's part of a franchise that not only brought Disney success in syndicated television, it kept them in that market for a good long while. Without Ducktales, there'd be no Disney Afternoon, and without a Disney Afternoon the Disney Legacy would have played out
very differently in the 1990's. It's a fun movie that deserves to be seen, and could even possibly be considered better than Aladdin. Possibly. You'll have to watch it to find out.
