10 Unexpected And Surprising Horror Movie Sequels
2. Doctor Sleep
The Shining (1980) is one of the most critically acclaimed psychological horrors of all time. Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, visionary director Stanley Kubrick (A Clockwork Orange) superbly brought this story to the screen, where it stood the test of time as a unique standalone movie. However, King would unexpectedly return to his idea over three decades later with follow-up novel Doctor Sleep (2013), picking up the story with a now adult Danny Torrance, the central child with the gift of ‘The Shining’ in the original.
Director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game) adapted Doctor Sleep, creating this wonderful 2019 follow-up movie starring Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting). The film follows the journey of Danny following the events of the first notorious tale, through to him living as a troubled adult, finding his way in the world as a struggling alcoholic, whilst trying to control the anger inherited from his father. He lives with his psychic ability which he also tries to suppress, as he is literally haunted by the ghosts of his past.
McGregor's character has to contend with a cult of vampire-esque beings who murder and feed on the ‘Shine’ of gifted children, whilst mentoring young Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), who shares his supernatural affliction. The movie beautifully looks back to Kubrick’s classic with great homage, whilst also staying faithful to Stephen King’s text, with the novelist famously distancing himself from the creation of Stanley Kubrick, despite its success and obvious strong artistic style.
