10 Unexpectedly Disturbing Film Performances

5. Ted Levine As Buffalo Bill - Silence Of The Lambs

When looking at a film which also stars an actor with a reputation as high as Anthony Hopkins portraying a super-intelligent but incarcerated serial killer/cannibal, it probably seems a bit odd to include the other villain of the piece as being disturbing instead. But that is precisely the reason why Ted Levine's appearance in Silence Of The Lambs is more unexpectedly unsettling. Although it is well noted that Hopkins does not feature on screen for very long at all, a lot of the film pivots upon the scenes involving him, so our attention is mainly focused upon the actions of Hannibal Lecter. This leaves room for Levine's character, Buffalo Bill (who is also a serial killer) to wreak his havoc upon our minds. Think about it; Lecter has been asked by the police to assist them in catching Bill, which is immediately an uneasy situation to think about, as it could possibly suggest that the police see Bill as a threat of equal severity to Lecter. Furthermore, there's the fact that Levine manages to turn himself into what can only be described as the most horrifying transvestite Jon Bon Jovi tribute the world has ever witnessed. Levine is the unsung hero of the film, as his character is unbelievably disturbing, given that he is at large, where Hannibal is in captivity.
